Honiara
Honiara is the nation’s capital, located on the north coast of Guadalcanal with approximately 70,000 inhabitants. Its international airport was the site of The Battle of Henderson Field, during the Guadalcanal campaign of 1942.
Modern day Honiara contains most of the government buildings and institutions of the Solomon Islands, as well as an International School, University and the National Museum. It attracts many visitors to the city for conferences, seminars and other corporate functions, so depending on your final or onward destination in the Solomon Islands, airline schedules may conspire to require you to spend a night or two in Honiara.
Most of the city’s accommodation is located within walking distance to the centre of town, for easy access to the banks, shops, Point Cruz wharf and the markets. There are also some great little cafes and restaurants, all independent of the major hotels.
There are several hotels of differing standards, a short drive from the airport. Many offer a choice of accommodation with at least one restaurant, conference room, swimming pool, long stay apartments and all have credit card facilities. Honiara is the gateway to Central Province, where currently the only access is by sea.
